What should you know about chlorine allergy rash?

Pool water can remove protective oils and leave skin dry, tight, itchy, or red. Friction from swimwear, heat, sweat, and shower products can add to the reaction. A true allergic response to chlorine is uncommon; a clinician may instead consider contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, heat rash, or another cause. The rash may appear where water, clothing, or splashes contacted the skin, but location alone cannot identify the cause.

Rinse with clean lukewarm water soon after leaving the pool, pat rather than rub, and apply a fragrance-free moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp. Use gentle cleanser only where needed and avoid fragranced products, hot showers, and scratching. Keep a note of the pool, swimwear, detergent, and timing of symptoms. If swimming repeatedly brings back the same rash, ask a clinician to assess the pattern before trying medicated creams.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, or widespread hives. Seek prompt care for blistering, skin peeling, facial swelling, eye involvement, fever, or rapidly worsening pain. Arrange a medical review when the rash persists away from pool exposure, becomes infected-looking, or keeps recurring despite rinsing and moisturising.

Ask whether the pattern fits irritation, contact dermatitis, eczema, or another condition; whether you need testing; and which cleanser or moisturiser suits your skin. Bring a list of medicines and a photo taken when the rash is most visible.
