What should you know about chikungunya fever?

Short answer
Chikungunya fever is a viral illness spread by mosquitoes and often occurs with prominent joint pain, muscle aches and fatigue.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the fever fits
The fever may start suddenly after infection, alongside headache, joint swelling or stiffness, muscle aches, rash and tiredness. Chikungunya is transmitted by infected mosquitoes rather than by ordinary casual contact. Fever and aching can also be caused by several other infections, so having a fever does not identify its cause. A clinician may ask where you have been, whether mosquitoes have bitten you, when symptoms began and whether your joints are affected. Testing may be considered when it will help distinguish chikungunya from other illnesses.
Managing symptoms
Take it easy, drink water or other suitable fluids, and rest in a cool environment. Gentle movement can help prevent stiffness, but stop if it increases pain. Follow package directions or medical advice for fever and pain medicines, and check before combining products. While fever or other symptoms are present, prevent mosquitoes from biting you with repellent, long sleeves, screens or a net. Book a GP Consultation if the fever is persistent, joint pain is substantial or you are unsure how to manage symptoms.
Warning signs
Get urgent medical help for difficulty breathing, collapse, confusion, severe dehydration, repeated vomiting, unusual bleeding or rapidly worsening weakness. Seek prompt advice if fever remains high or returns, or if joint pain prevents normal activities. Earlier assessment is sensible for infants, older adults, pregnancy and long-term conditions. Tell the clinician about recent travel or mosquito exposure, as this can guide the assessment.
What to ask
Ask whether chikungunya is plausible, whether you need testing, which fever medicine is safe for you, and what changes should prompt urgent review.
