Chikungunya diagnosis and treatment

A clinician will ask when symptoms began, whether you travelled or had mosquito exposure, and how fever, joint pain, muscle aches or rash have changed. They may examine your hydration, joints and general condition. Testing may be considered when the result would help distinguish chikungunya from another infection or guide care; the timing of a test can affect what it detects.

Treatment is usually supportive. It may include fluids, rest and a carefully selected medicine for fever or pain. Persistent joint symptoms may need follow-up and a gradual return to activity. Never assume that a familiar pain medicine is suitable if dengue or another illness is possible.

Write down your temperature, symptom start date, travel locations, mosquito exposure and medicines already taken. Drink regularly and rest while waiting for assessment. Protect yourself from further bites with repellent, covered skin and screens. Book a GP Consultation if symptoms are moderate, persistent or unclear.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, fainting, confusion, severe dehydration, repeated vomiting, unusual bleeding or rapid worsening. Request prompt review when joint pain makes walking or using your hands difficult, fever persists, or illness occurs during pregnancy or with a serious long-term condition.

Ask whether testing is appropriate now, which alternative diagnoses are being considered, how to use pain relief safely, what activity is suitable and when follow-up should occur.
