Chicken skin symptoms: how the bumps may feel and look

The texture is often described as sandpaper-like or gooseflesh-like, with bumps that are skin-coloured, pink, or red. They commonly appear on the outer upper arms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks and may be easier to see when the skin is dry. Keratosis pilaris is a frequent explanation for this pattern.

Pain, warmth, swelling, pus, crusting, or a sudden cluster after shaving is less typical of simple rough texture. Folliculitis can present with inflamed bumps around individual hairs, sometimes with itch or tenderness. A picture or description cannot replace an examination when symptoms are changing.

Use warm water, a gentle cleanser, and a fragrance-free moisturiser. Avoid scratching, squeezing, rough exfoliating tools, and tight clothing over the area. If the skin is intact, a pharmacist can suggest a suitable keratin-softening lotion. Test it cautiously, use only as directed, and stop if irritation becomes marked. Note where the bumps occur and whether shaving, sweat, weather, or a new product changes them.

Arrange medical care when bumps are painful, hot, rapidly spreading, draining, associated with fever, or repeatedly returning. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or face, or a widespread blistering rash. A clinician can distinguish keratosis pilaris from folliculitis, eczema, allergy, or another skin condition.
