Short answer

Chicken skin on the shoulders is often keratosis pilaris, a harmless rough texture caused by keratin plugging hair follicles, but inflamed or painful bumps may have another cause.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Small, rough follicle-centred bumps

What the bumps can mean

Keratosis pilaris commonly feels like fine sandpaper and may look flesh-coloured, pink, or red. Dry weather, friction from clothing, and naturally dry skin can make the texture more noticeable. Folliculitis is different: it can produce tender, itchy, or pus-filled spots around individual hairs. The appearance alone cannot confirm which one is present.

Helpful shoulder care

Wash with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser. Apply a plain moisturiser after bathing while the skin is still slightly damp. A product containing urea, lactic acid, or salicylic acid may smooth plugged follicles when used as directed, but introduce one active product at a time. Avoid rough scrubs, picking, and tight shoulder straps that increase rubbing.

When to seek care

Arrange a medical assessment if bumps become rapidly more red, hot, swollen, painful, or filled with pus, or if redness spreads. Seek prompt care with fever, feeling unwell, or a painful swelling. A clinician can distinguish keratosis pilaris from folliculitis and check persistent changes that do not improve with gentle care.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the pattern fits keratosis pilaris or folliculitis, which active ingredient suits your skin, how often to apply it, and what signs should make you stop treatment. Mention itching, pain, shaving, sports equipment, or new products that touch your shoulders.

Questions people ask

Is chicken skin on the shoulders contagious?

Keratosis pilaris is not contagious. Bumps caused by folliculitis may involve irritation or infection, so worsening inflammation deserves assessment.

Can I squeeze the bumps?

Squeezing can injure the follicle and increase irritation or marks. Gentle cleansing and moisturising are safer approaches.
