Keratosis pilaris creates many small, dry-feeling bumps at follicle openings and may be more noticeable where body hair is coarse or the skin is dry. Shaving, waxing, close trimming, sweat, and tight clothing can irritate follicles and produce itchy or tender bumps. Folliculitis may include pustules, whereas keratosis pilaris is usually a rough texture without drainage. A bump around a hair does not by itself show that hair removal caused it.

Use a gentle cleanser and moisturise after bathing. If shaving, soften the hair first, use a clean sharp razor, apply a bland shaving product, and shave in the direction of growth without repeated passes. Avoid picking or waxing an actively inflamed area. For rough, non-tender bumps, a lotion containing urea, lactic acid, or salicylic acid may help over time; introduce one product slowly. Reduce rubbing from tight sleeves or sports clothing, and rinse sweat from the skin after activity.

Have the area assessed if pain, warmth, swelling, pus, crusting, or spreading redness develops, or if hair removal repeatedly causes flares. Fever with a worsening rash needs prompt medical attention. A dermatologist can help when bumps scar, cause persistent itch, involve the scalp or face, or do not improve after changing shaving habits and moisturising. Treatment may differ for keratin plugs, ingrown hairs, and folliculitis.

Ask whether shaving, waxing, an ingrown hair, keratosis pilaris, or folliculitis is most consistent with your symptoms. Ask about a safer hair-removal method and which moisturiser or active ingredient will be least irritating for your skin.
