What should you know about chicken skin after pregnancy?

Keratosis pilaris causes small rough plugs around hair follicles, commonly on the upper arms, thighs, or cheeks. Hormonal and skin-barrier changes around pregnancy can alter how noticeable a pre-existing tendency becomes. Folliculitis is different: bumps may be tender, itchy, or centred on hairs, sometimes with pus. Location, onset, and symptoms are more useful than the phrase chicken skin alone.

Apply a fragrance-free moisturiser after bathing and use lukewarm water rather than very hot water. Choose mild cleansers and avoid scrubbing, picking, or rough exfoliating gloves. If breastfeeding or pregnant again, check topical ingredients with a clinician or pharmacist before using medicated creams. Give a new routine time to work and stop any product that causes burning or a new rash.

Arrange medical advice if the bumps spread quickly, become painful, ooze, form crusts, or come with fever. Seek urgent help for swelling of the lips or face, wheezing, or trouble breathing. A persistent rash after pregnancy also warrants review when it is very itchy or affects sleep, because several postpartum conditions can resemble rough follicle bumps.
