Short answer

Indigestion can cause burning or pressure behind the breastbone, but new or severe chest pain must be treated as potentially serious until a clinician assesses it.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What indigestion-related chest pain can feel like

Indigestion, also called dyspepsia, often starts in the upper abdomen and can be felt higher in the chest. Discomfort may feel like burning, fullness, pressure, or an acidic taste rising into the throat. It can follow a large meal, eating quickly, lying down soon after eating, or foods that trigger reflux. Belching, bloating, nausea, and sour fluid in the mouth can occur alongside it.

Several digestive conditions can produce similar symptoms, including acid reflux, gastritis, a hiatus hernia, peptic ulcer disease, gallstones, or Helicobacter Pylori Infection. These possibilities are different from one another and may need different assessment. Read more about [Indigestion](/symptoms/indigestion/) and [Acid Reflux](/conditions/acid-reflux/).

What you can do now

If the discomfort is mild, familiar, and clearly linked with meals, sit upright and avoid lying flat for a while. Eat smaller portions, slow down while eating, and notice whether spicy, fatty, acidic, or caffeinated foods make symptoms worse. Avoid smoking and alcohol if they trigger symptoms. Keep a short record of timing, meals, body position, and associated symptoms; this can help a clinician identify a pattern.

Do not use someone else’s medicine or keep treating recurring chest discomfort without advice. A pharmacist or clinician can explain whether an appropriate antacid or acid-reducing treatment is suitable, and whether you need assessment for [Gastritis](/conditions/gastritis/) or [Peptic Ulcer](/conditions/peptic-ulcer/).

When to seek care urgently

Call emergency services immediately for chest pain that is severe, crushing, tight, or persistent, or that spreads to the arm, back, neck, or jaw. Urgent help is also needed with breathlessness, fainting, cold sweating, marked weakness, confusion, or repeated vomiting. Do not drive yourself if you feel seriously unwell.

Arrange prompt medical advice for chest discomfort that keeps returning, is becoming more frequent, follows exertion, causes trouble swallowing, or comes with unexplained weight loss, black stools, vomiting blood, or ongoing abdominal pain. Digestive symptoms can overlap with heart and lung problems, so the sensation alone cannot safely identify the cause.

Questions to ask your doctor

Ask what features make indigestion more likely in your case, whether your medicines or health conditions could contribute, and whether you need tests for reflux, an ulcer, gallstones, or Helicobacter pylori. You can also ask how long to try a treatment, what symptoms should prompt review, and whether [Acid Reflux Medication](/treatments/medical-management/acid-reflux-medication/) is appropriate.

Questions people ask

Can indigestion cause pain in the chest?

Yes. Reflux or irritation in the upper digestive tract can feel like burning or pressure behind the breastbone, sometimes with belching or a sour taste.

How can you tell indigestion from a heart problem?

You cannot reliably tell from sensation alone. Chest pain that is severe, persistent, exertional, spreading, or accompanied by breathlessness, sweating, fainting, or weakness needs emergency assessment.

Should recurring chest discomfort be checked?

Yes. Repeated symptoms deserve medical advice, especially when they affect swallowing, occur with vomiting or black stools, or are changing over time.
