Chest pain and frequent burping: what to know

Swallowed air, reflux, or irritation in the upper stomach can cause burping alongside burning or pressure behind the breastbone. Acid Reflux may present with a sour taste, food coming back up, or symptoms after meals. Gastritis and Peptic Ulcer can cause upper-abdominal discomfort that is felt near the chest. Angina may present with chest pressure during exertion and can spread to the arm, jaw, back, or neck. Burping does not rule out a heart or lung problem, so the pattern and accompanying symptoms matter.

Stop strenuous activity and sit upright while you observe the pain. Note when it began, whether eating or lying down changes it, and whether the burping is accompanied by burning, nausea, sweating, breathlessness, or dizziness. Avoid a large meal, alcohol, and smoking while symptoms are active. Do not use someone else’s prescription medicine. If symptoms recur, arrange a clinical review so a clinician can examine you and decide whether heart, lung, or digestive tests are needed.

Call emergency services now for crushing, tight, or persistent chest pain, or pain with shortness of breath, fainting, cold sweat, marked weakness, confusion, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or neck. Seek urgent assessment for sudden chest pain with rapid breathing or coughing blood, because Pulmonary Embolism can present with chest pain and breathing difficulty. A new blistering rash with one-sided burning pain may point to Shingles and still deserves medical advice.

Ask whether the symptoms fit reflux, gastritis, or another cause; what features would make heart or lung assessment necessary; and which medicines, foods, or activities could be aggravating them. Share your symptom timing, medical history, and any medicines or supplements you take.
