Chemical Peel to Remove Sun Damage: What to Know

Sun-damaged skin may show uneven colour, rough texture, fine lines or sun spots. A peel can affect surface changes, but it does not erase all effects of ultraviolet exposure or replace examination of a suspicious lesion. Glycolic acid may be included in a peel, with strength chosen according to the area, skin tone and sensitivity. Melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation need separate consideration because irritation may deepen colour.

Tell the clinician about recent sun exposure, tanning, active dermatitis, cold sores, medicines and prior pigment changes. Follow the recommended preparation. Afterward, keep the routine bland: gentle cleansing, moisturiser and diligent protection from sunlight. Avoid picking flakes, abrasive tools, heat and strong actives until the skin has recovered. Treating ongoing exposure is part of caring for the result.

Contact the clinic for severe or increasing pain, blistering, open skin, pus, spreading redness, fever or marked swelling. A spot that changes, bleeds or fails to heal should receive medical assessment rather than repeated cosmetic peeling. Emergency help is needed for breathing difficulty or rapid facial swelling.
