Chemical Peel to Remove Dark Spots: What to Know

Dark spots can follow acne or irritation, occur as sun spots, or reflect melasma. A peel may improve surface colour, yet inflammation or ongoing sunlight can bring pigment back or make it darker. Glycolic acid is used in some peel formulas, but ingredient, depth and timing need individual selection. A changing, bleeding or unusual spot should be assessed rather than treated cosmetically.

Before treatment, mention recent tanning, active rash, cold sores, acne medicines and a history of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Use prescribed preparation only. During recovery, cleanse gently, moisturise, avoid picking or scrubbing, and protect exposed skin from sunlight. Treating the trigger, such as uncontrolled acne or irritation, may be as important as fading the existing mark.

Report severe pain, blistering, crusting, pus, spreading redness or pigment that becomes markedly darker. Arrange assessment for a spot that changes shape or colour, bleeds, does not heal or looks different from nearby marks.

Ask what is causing the spot, whether a peel is suitable for your skin tone, and how irritation will be prevented. Confirm the aftercare plan and what alternatives exist if pigment is deeper or recurring.
