Chemical Peel for Scar Removal: What to Know

A flat dark or red mark after acne is different from an indented scar, a firm raised scar, or a scar attached to deeper tissue. A peel mainly changes the outer skin, so it may help some surface roughness or colour contrast but has limited reach into deeper scar structure. Active acne, infection, eczema, or an undiagnosed changing lesion should be addressed before cosmetic resurfacing.

Skin tone, sun exposure, inflammation, and a personal tendency toward post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation affect the risk of a darker or lighter patch. Improvement is gradual and may be incomplete; a single treatment should not be treated as a promise.

Have the scar examined and describe how it started, whether it is painful or itchy, and whether it has changed. Disclose medicines, pregnancy, recent tanning, cold sores, allergies, prior peels, and a history of raised scars. Follow instructions about pausing retinoids or other irritants. Afterward, cleanse gently, moisturise, avoid picking, and protect the area from sunlight while it heals.

Call the treating clinician for increasing pain, marked swelling, spreading redness, pus, fever, persistent weeping, blistering, or a rapidly changing pigment patch. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face or throat. A little warmth, dryness, or flaking may follow treatment, but worsening symptoms need review.

Ask what scar type you have, which feature the peel is intended to change, and whether another treatment is more appropriate for depth or elevation. Ask about a test spot, expected healing, product restrictions, pigment risk, and how progress will be assessed without misleading photo comparisons.
