Chemical peel in skin of colour: what it means

Skin of colour contains more active pigment-producing cells, and those cells can respond to irritation with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or temporary lightening. This does not automatically rule out a peel. It means the clinician should match the ingredient, strength, contact time, and treatment depth to your skin and concern. The reason for treatment also matters: acne marks, uneven tone, and texture may need different plans. A small test area may be discussed, but it cannot predict every response.

Share your history of pigment changes, keloid scars, eczema, cold sores, recent sun exposure, and products or medicines that irritate your skin. Arrive with calm skin and follow the agreed preparation routine. After treatment, use gentle cleansing, moisturiser, and sun protection; avoid picking flakes or adding strong actives without advice. Keep follow-up appointments so colour changes can be addressed early. A qualified practitioner should be able to explain the product and emergency plan in plain language.

Contact the clinic if burning continues, swelling increases, blisters appear, redness spreads, or the treated area becomes painful or oozy. Seek urgent help for eye exposure or facial swelling with breathing difficulty. Report new dark or pale patches that persist, since early guidance may prevent further irritation.
