Chemical Peel for Underarms: What to Know

Underarm colour can change after shaving, rubbing, deodorant irritation, inflammation, or a previous rash. A peel removes or loosens part of the outer layer, which may reduce superficial pigment or roughness when the skin is healthy. It cannot identify or treat every cause of darkening. Ongoing irritation can create post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and a clinician may first need to address the trigger. Active rash, broken skin, infection, or tender lumps makes cosmetic peeling inappropriate until assessed.

Tell the clinician about recent shaving, waxing, laser hair removal, new deodorants, eczema, allergies, medicines, and previous colour changes after irritation. Do not apply the peel at home or use it on freshly shaved skin unless instructed. During recovery, wash gently, avoid friction and tight clothing, and use the recommended bland moisturiser. Pause fragranced deodorant, scrubs, and acids until the skin has settled. Glycolic acid is a possible ingredient, but concentration and contact time must be chosen for this sensitive area.

Contact the clinic promptly for severe burning, increasing pain, marked swelling, blisters, spreading redness, pus, fever, or a reaction extending beyond the treated skin. Seek medical assessment for a persistent rash, foul odour with drainage, a painful lump, or colour change that continues to worsen.

Ask what is causing the darkening, whether hair removal or deodorant irritation is contributing, which product is suitable, how to protect the area from rubbing, and when you may resume deodorant and shaving.
