Chemical Peel for Tan Removal: What to Know

A tan is a pigment response after ultraviolet exposure; it is not a layer that can be safely scrubbed away. A peel loosens selected outer cells, so it may make recently darkened surface skin look more even while it heals. It does not undo ultraviolet injury or prevent another tan. Patchy colour can also reflect melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or sun-damaged skin, and the right plan depends on the cause, depth, and location of the pigment.

Tell the clinician about recent sun exposure, self-tanner, shaving or waxing, sensitive skin, cold sores, active acne, and all products or medicines used on the area. Avoid deliberate tanning before and after treatment. Use only the cleanser, moisturiser, and sunscreen recommended for the healing phase. Do not pull away loose skin or combine the peel with home acids, scrubs, or bleaching products unless specifically instructed. Glycolic acid is one possible peel material, not a signal to self-treat with concentrated products.

Ask the treating clinic for advice if burning continues or intensifies, swelling becomes marked, blisters appear, redness spreads, or the area develops discharge, fever, or severe pain. Arrange a review if colour becomes sharply darker or lighter and does not settle. A new irregular or bleeding pigmented mark should be examined rather than treated cosmetically.
