Chemical Peel for Sun Spots: What to Know

Sun spots are areas of extra pigment linked with repeated ultraviolet exposure. A peel places a selected chemical solution on the skin so outer cells shed in a controlled way. Newer skin may look more even as healing progresses, although a peel cannot remove the exposure that caused the pigment. A changing, bleeding, crusted, or very different mark needs examination before any cosmetic treatment. Skin that forms dark marks after irritation may need a cautious plan; this can overlap with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or sun-damaged skin.

At consultation, mention recent tanning, cold sores, eczema, active breakouts, medicines, allergies, and previous reactions to skincare. Do not pick or scrub peeling skin. Follow the clinic’s cleansing and moisturising instructions, avoid heat and deliberate sun exposure while the skin settles, and use broad-spectrum sunscreen as directed. Stop only the products your clinician advises you to pause. A glycolic acid peel is one possible approach, but the ingredient and depth should be selected after examining the spot and surrounding skin.

Contact the treating clinic promptly for worsening swelling, severe or increasing pain, blistering, pus, spreading redness, fever, or an eye-area reaction. Seek assessment for a spot that changes shape or colour, repeatedly bleeds, develops a persistent sore, or does not heal. These findings should not be masked with another peel.

Ask whether the mark has been diagnosed as a sun spot, which peel is proposed, how you should prepare, what darkening or lightening changes are possible, and when normal skincare and sun exposure can resume.
