Chemical Peel for Scars: What to Know

A peel removes or loosens selected surface cells. It may make mild uneven texture or post-acne colour differences less noticeable, but it cannot replace lost volume or release skin that is tethered below the surface. Acne can leave indented scars, raised scars, or flat brown or red marks; these are different problems and should not be treated as interchangeable.

A clinician may consider the scar’s depth, age, location, skin tone, and whether acne is still active. Comedonal Acne and Keratosis Pilaris can cause bumps that resemble scarring, so diagnosis matters before a procedure. Glycolic Acid is used in some peels, but the formula and depth determine the expected recovery.

Bring a list of skin medicines and describe previous procedures, cold sores, eczema, delayed healing, and any tendency to develop darker marks after irritation. Do not peel a fresh wound, active infection, or inflamed breakout. If the concern is mainly a flat mark, ask whether pigment-focused care is more suitable than resurfacing.

After a peel, follow the clinic’s cleansing and moisturising instructions, protect the area from sunlight, and leave flaking skin alone. Avoid adding retinoids, scrubs, hair removal, or another procedure until healing is confirmed. Improvement is often gradual, and the treatment plan may combine approaches.

Seek prompt advice for severe pain, blistering, open or weeping skin, increasing swelling, pus, spreading redness, or fever. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face or lips. A scar that suddenly enlarges, bleeds, ulcerates, or becomes painful needs examination rather than repeat cosmetic treatment.
