Chemical Peel for Dark Lips: What to Know

Darkening may follow dryness, repeated licking, smoking, sun exposure, contact irritation, inflammation, or certain medicines. A new or changing patch can have other causes and should be examined before cosmetic treatment. The vermilion lip is more delicate than ordinary facial skin, while the inside of the mouth is mucosal tissue and is not an area for routine cosmetic peeling.

After any approved treatment, use the recommended bland lip barrier, avoid licking, picking, fragranced products, spicy irritants, and unnecessary sun exposure. Keep follow-up advice available, because swelling and peeling around the mouth can need a different response from ordinary facial dryness.

Seek prompt medical advice for severe swelling, blisters, open cracks, pus, spreading redness, fever, trouble eating or drinking, or eye symptoms. Have a persistent, bleeding, painful, or changing dark patch examined rather than repeating cosmetic treatment.
