Cheilitis at the side of the mouth: what to know

Cheilitis at the side of the mouth often reflects moisture and barrier damage, but persistent cracks need an examination for the right treatment. Saliva can collect in the corner, soften the skin, and allow repeated splitting when the mouth moves. Lip licking, dry weather, dental appliances, skin conditions, and infection can also contribute.

The area may look red, macerated, scaly, or crusted, with pain when smiling, eating, or opening the mouth. One or both corners can be affected. Recurrent episodes may point to ongoing saliva exposure, a product reaction, an ill-fitting appliance, or another condition that deserves a closer look rather than repeated self-treatment.

Gently clean the corner, pat it fully dry, and apply a bland protective ointment to reduce contact with saliva. Avoid licking, picking, fragranced products, and spicy or acidic foods if they sting. Keep dentures or mouth appliances clean and mention fit problems to a dental professional. Emollient therapy may help restore the barrier.

Do not use leftover steroid, antifungal, or antibiotic creams without advice. The wrong medicine can mask the pattern or worsen an infection, while treatment at the corner may need a specific combination or course.

Seek a medical or dental assessment if the crack persists, bleeds, repeatedly returns, spreads, or develops discharge or thick crust. Get urgent help for rapidly increasing facial swelling, fever with spreading redness, trouble swallowing, or breathing difficulty.
