How to treat cheilitis

Short answer
Cheilitis treatment usually combines avoiding irritation, protecting the lip barrier and treating the identified cause.

What cheilitis means
Cheilitis is inflammation of the lips. The skin may feel tight, burn, itch, peel or split, and saliva, lip licking, dry air, fragrances or contact reactions can keep it active. Cracks at the corners may need a different assessment from irritation across the lip surface.
What you can do
Stop new or scented lip products and avoid licking, biting or picking the skin. Apply a bland protective ointment regularly, especially after eating and before sleep; see [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) for barrier-support options. A clinician may recommend a short, appropriate course of [Topical Corticosteroids](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-corticosteroids/) when inflammation needs calming. Do not put steroid medicine on the lips without guidance, because the product and duration matter.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical review if cracking persists despite gentle care, keeps returning, spreads beyond the lips or makes eating difficult. Seek prompt care for marked swelling, pus, spreading redness, fever, painful blisters or trouble breathing. A clinician can look for infection, allergy, eczema or another cause rather than treating every sore lip in the same way.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the pattern suggests irritation, allergy, infection or corner-of-mouth inflammation; which product should protect the area; and how long any prescribed medicine should be used. Mention toothpaste, cosmetics, dental appliances, medicines and habits that touch your lips.

Questions people ask
Can cheilitis settle with home care?
Mild irritation may improve after triggers are removed and the lips are protected, but persistent or recurring symptoms need assessment.
Should I use a steroid cream on cheilitis?
Only use a steroid product on the lips when a clinician has selected it and explained its duration.
