Characteristics of a fibroadenoma

It is a benign growth made from breast gland and supporting tissue. A clinician cannot confirm the cause of a new lump by touch alone, because different breast changes can feel similar.

A fibroadenoma often has a clearly defined edge and may move beneath the skin when pressed. It can feel rubbery or firm and may be round or oval. Some are tender around a menstrual period, while others cause no discomfort.

Its size may remain stable or change with hormonal shifts, including pregnancy. These characteristics can support an assessment, but none confirms the diagnosis on its own.

Arrange a clinical breast assessment for any new or changing lump. The clinician will ask when you noticed it, whether it changes with your cycle, and whether there are nipple or skin changes.

Breast ultrasound can show whether a lump is solid or fluid-filled and describe its shape and borders. Depending on the findings, age and clinical examination, a breast biopsy may be advised to examine tissue. A lump that is confirmed as a fibroadenoma may be monitored; excision may be considered if it grows, causes troublesome symptoms or remains uncertain.

Book an appointment promptly for a new breast or armpit lump, a lump that enlarges, skin dimpling, a newly pulled-in nipple, or nipple discharge, particularly if it is bloody. Redness, warmth, marked swelling or fever also needs timely assessment because infection may require treatment.

If a previously assessed lump changes in texture, size or mobility, return for review rather than assuming it is the same process.

Ask what the examination and imaging show, whether tissue sampling is recommended, how any monitoring will be arranged, and which changes should bring you back sooner. If removal is discussed, ask about the reason, the expected scar and alternatives to surgery.
