Loose stools and a change in bowel habits

Short answer
Loose stools are often temporary, but a new or persistent change deserves medical review, especially with bleeding, pain, weight loss, or weakness.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What loose stools can mean
Food changes, an infection, medicines, stress, or an existing digestive condition can alter stool consistency. The pattern matters: note whether the change began suddenly, continues between meals, wakes you at night, or alternates with constipation.
Bowel and rectal cancers can present with an ongoing change in bowel habit, but loose stools alone do not establish the cause. A clinician considers the whole picture, including blood in the stool, abdominal discomfort, unexplained weight loss, tiredness, family history, and examination findings.
Steps to take now
Drink fluids regularly and consider an oral rehydration solution if repeated loose stools are causing fluid loss. Eat foods you tolerate, wash your hands carefully, and avoid preparing food for others if an infection may be responsible.
Keep a brief record of stool frequency, appearance, possible triggers, pain, fever, blood, recent travel, and new medicines or supplements. Arrange a routine appointment if the change persists, recurs, or is unusual for you. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without discussing it with the prescriber.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for black or heavily blood-stained stool, severe or worsening abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen with vomiting, fainting, confusion, or signs of marked dehydration such as very little urine and inability to keep fluids down.
Contact a clinician promptly for visible blood, fever that continues, unexplained weight loss, increasing weakness, or loose stools during cancer treatment or when your immune system is suppressed. These features need assessment because they can change which tests or treatment are appropriate.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether any medicine could be contributing, whether stool or blood tests are suitable, and what duration or new symptom should trigger follow-up. Mention previous bowel disease, recent antibiotics, travel, and any family history of bowel cancer.
Questions people ask
Can loose stools be caused by food or medicine?
Yes. Dietary changes, infections, antibiotics, laxatives, and some other medicines can loosen stools. A clinician can review the timing without interrupting necessary treatment.
Will I need tests for persistent loose stools?
Testing depends on the pattern and associated symptoms. A clinician may consider stool tests, blood tests, examination, or bowel investigations after reviewing your history.
