Understanding the chance of a silent miscarriage

There is no symptom pattern that can tell you your personal chance. Pregnancy symptoms can lessen or fluctuate in an ongoing pregnancy, while a missed miscarriage may cause no noticeable change.

A silent miscarriage, also called a missed miscarriage, means that a pregnancy has stopped developing but the pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus. Because the body may not begin bleeding straight away, the finding is sometimes made during a routine scan.

A single scan may be inconclusive when dates are uncertain or the pregnancy is earlier than expected. In that situation, the care team may recommend another scan after a suitable interval before confirming what has happened.

Contact your maternity service if pregnancy symptoms change and you are concerned, especially if you also have bleeding or pain. The clinician will use your dates, symptoms, examination when needed, and ultrasound findings rather than symptoms alone.

If a miscarriage is confirmed, options may include waiting for the tissue to pass naturally, medication, or a procedure. The suitable choice depends on your clinical condition, scan findings, preferences, and whether there are signs of infection or heavy bleeding.

Seek urgent care for very heavy bleeding, severe or worsening abdominal pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, chills, or unpleasant-smelling vaginal discharge. These signs can indicate substantial blood loss, infection, or another pregnancy complication that needs prompt assessment.

Call emergency services if you collapse, feel unable to stay awake, or have severe pain with weakness. Do not drive yourself when you feel faint.
