Chances of going into labour after ECV

ECV uses firm pressure on the abdomen to try to turn a baby from breech or another non-head-down position. Brief abdominal soreness or irregular tightening can follow and is not necessarily established labour. Your individual timing still depends mainly on the pregnancy and whether labour begins naturally or is planned.

The maternity team checks the baby's heartbeat around the procedure and observes you afterward. At home, mild tenderness where pressure was applied may occur. Labour is suggested by contractions that become regular, stronger and closer together, or by the waters breaking, rather than soreness alone.

A successful turn changes the baby's position but does not set an exact birth date. If the baby does not turn, the team will discuss birth options based on position, your health, the baby's wellbeing and local maternity practice.

Follow the discharge instructions from your maternity unit and keep the unit's contact number nearby. Pay attention to your baby's usual movement pattern and note whether tightenings settle or develop a regular pattern. Attend any arranged position check or antenatal visit. Do not assume ECV replaces later birth planning; your team may discuss expectant care, induction of labour or caesarean birth according to your circumstances.

Call your maternity assessment unit promptly for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe or persistent abdominal pain, reduced or changed baby movements, dizziness, faintness, fever or any concern that labour has begun. Seek emergency help for heavy bleeding, collapse or severe continuous pain. Use the unit's instructions even if your symptoms begin soon after you leave.

Ask whether the baby is now head-down, what discomfort is expected, how movements should feel, whom to call overnight and when position will be checked again. Also ask how the ECV result affects the current birth plan and what would prompt a change in that plan.
