How to Get Rid of Cellulitis

Cellulitis affects deeper skin and the tissue beneath it. The area may become red, warm, swollen, tender, and increasingly uncomfortable. A small cut, cracked skin, bite, wound, or fungal infection such as Athlete's Foot can provide an entry point for bacteria.

A clinician may diagnose it by examining the skin and asking how quickly the changes developed. Other conditions can resemble cellulitis, so leftover antibiotics or creams should not be used as a substitute for an examination.

Arrange same-day medical advice when cellulitis is suspected. Take any prescribed medicine exactly as directed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes it. Keep the affected skin clean and protected, avoid squeezing or puncturing it, and rest the area.

If a limb is involved, gentle elevation can help reduce swelling. Marking the edge of redness with a pen and noting whether it moves outward can help you describe change to a clinician, but it does not replace review.

Seek urgent medical help if redness is spreading quickly, pain is severe or escalating, swelling is marked, or fever develops. Emergency assessment is needed for confusion, faintness, breathing difficulty, blue or pale skin, or feeling suddenly very unwell because a serious infection such as Sepsis can develop.

People with Type 2 Diabetes, poor circulation, reduced immunity, or a wound on the foot may need earlier assessment.
