Cellulitis near a hair follicle: what to know

A follicle can become irritated after shaving, waxing, sweating, or friction. This may produce a small red bump centred on one hair and sometimes a tiny pustule. Cellulitis usually causes a broader area of warm, tender, swollen, red skin that can enlarge beyond the original follicle. It may follow a nick or damaged skin, but the visible starting point does not show how deep the infection is. Athlete's Foot and scratching can create breaks that let bacteria enter. A clinician may need to check for an abscess, which sometimes requires drainage rather than cream alone.

Arrange prompt assessment when redness is spreading, pain is increasing, or several nearby follicles become involved. Stop shaving or waxing the area, wash gently, pat dry, and wear loose clothing. Do not squeeze a pustule or try to open a swelling with a needle. Avoid sharing razors and towels. Seek emergency help for rapidly expanding redness, severe pain, marked swelling, blistering, dark or numb skin, confusion, faintness, breathing trouble, or a Fever with shaking chills.
