What should you know about cell phone otoscope?

A phone-connected otoscope may provide a view of the outer ear canal and eardrum when the angle, focus and lighting are suitable. It can help a clinician understand what you saw, especially during a remote consultation, but a blurry or incomplete image can miss swelling, a foreign object, fluid or a damaged eardrum.

Ear symptoms have different causes, including wax, infection, pressure changes and referred pain. The picture must be considered with pain, fever, discharge, hearing, balance and examination findings. A normal-looking image does not rule out every ear problem.

Only use an attachment according to its instructions and stop if there is pain, resistance, bleeding or distress. Do not push the tip into the ear, use it to remove wax, or share an unclean device. In a child, keep the child still and let a trained clinician guide the examination when possible.

Save images only through a secure health service if they need to be shared. Arrange a GP consultation for persistent symptoms, and use a child health consultation for a young child whose ear cannot be assessed safely at home.

Seek prompt care for severe ear pain, fever, pus or blood from the ear, sudden hearing loss, marked dizziness, swelling behind the ear, a lodged object or symptoms after an injury. Do not delay urgent assessment while trying to obtain a better phone image.
