What should you know about celiac cold hands and feet?

Inflammation in coeliac disease can reduce the small intestine’s ability to absorb nutrients. Low iron may contribute to anaemia, which can cause tiredness, pale skin, breathlessness or feeling cold. Cold fingers and toes can also occur with Hypothyroidism or reduced circulation, including Peripheral Arterial Disease. The direction matters: cold hands and feet do not show that someone has coeliac disease.

Arrange a medical review if the symptom is persistent, new or accompanied by fatigue, dizziness, paleness, numbness or shortness of breath. A clinician may examine circulation and request blood tests for anaemia, iron status, thyroid function and coeliac disease, depending on your history. Do not start Iron Supplementation without advice, because the cause and suitable dose need checking.

Seek urgent help if one hand or foot suddenly becomes cold, pale, blue, very painful or numb, or if you cannot move it normally. Prompt assessment is also needed for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting or rapidly worsening weakness.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest iron deficiency or another form of Anaemia, whether thyroid or circulation checks are needed, and whether coeliac testing should be included. Mention changes in colour, pain, numbness, bowel symptoms and any supplements.
