One high clinic reading cannot show whether blood pressure is consistently elevated at home. Anxiety symptoms may make appointments feel harder, although white coat hypertension is a blood-pressure pattern rather than a diagnosis of anxiety. Home readings or ambulatory blood pressure monitoring can help compare daytime and nighttime patterns.

Before a reading, rest quietly, keep both feet supported, place your arm at heart level, and avoid talking. Take measurements as your clinician recommends and record the time, symptoms, medicines, and circumstances. Do not stop or start blood-pressure medicine based on a single result. Seek emergency help for a very high reading accompanied by chest pain, severe breathlessness, weakness on one side, difficulty speaking, confusion, or a sudden severe headache.
