Causes of Unilateral Hand Swelling

Short answer
Swelling in one hand is commonly linked to local injury, infection, irritation, joint inflammation, or impaired drainage, and its speed and accompanying symptoms guide urgency.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Heat, redness, fever, colour change, and numbness
Possible local explanations
A fall, impact, overuse, bite, sting, or small skin break can trigger swelling on one side. Tendon or joint irritation may make particular movements painful. A wrist injury, including a distal radius fracture, may cause swelling that extends into the hand even when the main pain is near the wrist.
Warmth, redness, increasing tenderness, or fever raises concern for infection or active inflammation. Finger stiffness and several painful joints may occur with rheumatoid arthritis. One-sided swelling is a symptom pattern, not a diagnosis, and a clinician may need to examine circulation, sensation, skin, joints, and movement.
What to do at home
Remove rings early, rest the aggravating activity, and keep the hand comfortably elevated. Use gentle finger movement only if it does not increase pain. Keep any wound clean and covered. Avoid forceful massage over a hot, red, or unexplained swelling, and do not splint tightly without advice.
Seek an appointment if the swelling has no clear cause, lasts beyond a short period, returns, or limits grip and movement. Note the onset, recent activities, injuries, bites, wounds, and any change in colour or sensation.
When it needs urgent assessment
Get urgent care for rapidly worsening swelling, severe pain, fever, spreading redness, pus, blue or pale fingers, a cold hand, new numbness, marked weakness, or inability to move the fingers. After an injury, deformity or loss of function should be assessed promptly.
Questions for a clinician
Ask whether the swelling is coming from the skin, tendon, joint, bone, or circulation; whether imaging is needed; and how to protect movement while the cause is being clarified.

Questions people ask
Can a minor injury swell only one hand?
Yes. Local tissue irritation or a wrist injury can affect one side. Persistent pain, reduced movement, or deformity warrants assessment.
When is one-hand swelling an emergency?
Rapid progression, severe pain, colour or temperature change, numbness, fever with spreading redness, or loss of finger movement needs urgent care.
