Causes of seminoma

Certain developmental and personal-history factors can be associated with greater risk, including a testicle that did not descend normally and a previous germ cell tumour. A risk factor is not proof of why an individual became ill.

Seminoma is a type of germ cell tumour, most often arising from cells in a testicle that would normally contribute to sperm production. Changes within these cells allow continued division when normal controls would stop it.

The condition is not caused by a knock, tight clothing, sexual activity, or something a person did immediately before noticing a lump. An injury may draw attention to an existing change, but it does not explain the tumour's origin.

Check both testicles periodically so you recognise your usual shape and feel. Report a new lump, firmness, enlargement, heaviness, or lasting ache rather than trying to decide its cause yourself.

A clinician may examine the scrotum, arrange an ultrasound, and request blood tests. When a testicular tumour is suspected, the diagnostic and treatment sequence is planned carefully because sampling through the scrotal skin is generally avoided.

Book a prompt appointment for a testicular lump that may not hurt, a change in size or firmness, scrotal heaviness, or discomfort that persists.
