What Causes Ringworm on the Head?

Head ringworm, or scalp tinea, spreads through fungal spores on an infected person or animal and through shared combs, hats, towels, pillows, or hair tools. The fungus can enter around a hair shaft, causing scaling, fragile hairs, and patches where hairs break close to the scalp. It may itch, but itching is not required.

A scaly scalp or skin rash has several possible causes, including eczema, psoriasis, or irritation from hair products. A clinician may examine the scalp and collect hairs or surface material when needed. Prompt identification matters because scalp infection commonly needs medicine that reaches the hair follicles; creams alone may not be enough.

Do not share combs, brushes, hats, helmets, towels, or pillowcases while the diagnosis is being assessed. Wash or replace items that touch the scalp according to clinical advice, and check close household contacts and pets if exposure is possible. A clinician may prescribe oral antifungal treatment, sometimes alongside topical antifungal treatment for the scalp. Avoid shaving the affected area or using steroid cream without guidance.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for patchy hair loss, broken hairs with black dots, marked scaling, tenderness, swelling, pus, or swollen glands near the neck. A painful boggy swelling or fever needs urgent attention because inflammation can damage follicles. Anyone who develops an itchy or scaly rash after contact should seek advice and mention the possible exposure.
