What Causes Ringworm in Dogs?

Despite its name, ringworm is not caused by a worm. Fungal spores can remain on fur, bedding, brushes, furniture, and floors. A dog may acquire the infection through close contact with an infected animal or by touching a contaminated surface. Puppies, older dogs, and animals with weakened defences may be more vulnerable, but any dog can be affected.

Signs can include circular areas of hair loss, broken hairs, scaling, crusting, or an itchy rash. Appearance alone cannot confirm the cause because allergies, parasites, and other skin problems can look similar. Human contact with an infected dog can lead to a skin infection, so household symptoms deserve attention.

Arrange veterinary assessment and avoid sharing brushes, bedding, or grooming tools until the diagnosis is clear. Wash hands after handling the dog, clean commonly touched surfaces, and follow the treatment and cleaning plan provided by the veterinarian. Treatment may involve topical antifungal treatment, oral antifungal treatment, or both, depending on the animal and the extent of infection. Do not apply human products to a dog without veterinary advice.

Seek veterinary care promptly when hair loss is spreading, the skin is painful or oozing, the dog seems unwell, or another pet has developed a rash. Contact a healthcare professional if anyone in the household develops an expanding ring-shaped rash or scaly skin after contact. Children and people with reduced immunity should avoid close contact until advice is obtained.
