Causes of Pruritus in Pregnancy

Short answer
Pruritus in pregnancy can result from dry, stretching skin, inflammatory rashes, infections, or pregnancy-related liver disease.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
Pruritus in pregnancy can result from dry, stretching skin, inflammatory rashes, infections, or pregnancy-related liver disease. The location, appearance of the skin, timing, and presence of other symptoms help separate these possibilities. Itching without a visible rash can still need medical attention, particularly when it involves the palms or soles or is worse at night.
What may be causing the itch
As the abdomen and breasts enlarge, skin stretching and dryness can create a tight, itchy feeling. Pregnancy can also trigger or change inflammatory skin conditions. Atopic dermatitis may cause dry, sensitive, itchy patches; contact dermatitis can follow exposure to a new soap, fragrance, detergent, fabric, or topical product. Hives produce raised, transient welts. Psoriasis, lichen planus, and asteatotic eczema are other possible skin causes.
Infections can also itch. Scabies often causes intense itching with small bumps and may affect people living in the same home. A skin yeast infection tends to occur in warm, moist folds and may cause redness, soreness, or a moist rash. Itching is not itself a diagnosis, so the same symptom can have very different explanations.
Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy is a liver-related condition that commonly causes itching without a primary rash. It may be widespread or concentrated on the hands and feet. A clinician may check liver function and bile acids when the pattern raises concern.
What you can do now
Use a fragrance-free moisturiser regularly, especially after a short lukewarm shower. Choose loose, breathable clothing, keep nails short, and use a cool compress instead of scratching. Stop newly introduced scented products and note whether the rash changes after an exposure. Do not start oral medicines, steroid creams, anti-parasite treatments, or antifungal products without checking that they are suitable during pregnancy. Arrange an assessment if itching is persistent, spreading, disturbing sleep, or accompanied by a rash that is not settling.
When to seek care promptly
Contact your maternity team or clinician promptly for new intense itching without a rash, itching on the palms or soles, or symptoms that are notably worse at night. Seek urgent help for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, severe abdominal pain, facial or tongue swelling, breathing difficulty, or a rapidly spreading blistering or painful rash. Mention reduced fetal movement immediately according to the advice your maternity team has given you.
Questions for your doctor or midwife
Ask which causes fit the itch's location and whether your skin needs examination. You can ask whether liver tests or bile-acid testing are appropriate, which moisturiser or treatment is pregnancy-compatible, and whether household contacts need assessment if scabies is possible. Bring a list of new products, medicines, supplements, and any changes in urine, stools, skin colour, or fetal movement.

Questions people ask
Can pregnancy itself cause itchy skin?
Yes. Stretching and dryness can make skin itchy, and pregnancy can also trigger or alter inflammatory rashes. Persistent or unusual itching still deserves an assessment because liver-related causes may have no visible rash.
Is itching without a rash during pregnancy concerning?
It can be, especially when it is intense, worse at night, or affects the palms and soles. Contact your maternity team or clinician so they can decide whether an examination and liver-related blood tests are needed.
What should I avoid for pregnancy itching?
Avoid scratching when possible and do not begin medicines or medicated creams without confirming that they are suitable for pregnancy. Fragranced products may also aggravate irritated skin.
