Causes of prostatitis in males

Bacteria can travel from the urinary tract into the prostate and trigger acute inflammation. A urinary tract infection may occur alongside prostatitis, with burning urination, frequent urination, urgency, pelvic discomfort or difficulty passing urine.

Some longer-lasting cases have no bacteria identified. Pelvic muscle tension, irritation of nerves, urine flowing back towards prostate ducts, or earlier urinary inflammation may contribute. Symptoms can fluctuate, and the cause is not always found from one test. Prostatitis is different from prostate cancer, and symptoms alone cannot establish either diagnosis.

Arrange a GP Consultation if pain, urinary changes or ejaculation-related discomfort continue. Assessment may include questions about timing, fever, urine flow and previous infections, followed by an examination and urine testing when appropriate.

Do not start leftover antibiotics. Antibiotic Treatment is useful when a bacterial cause is suspected or confirmed, while non-infectious symptoms may need a different plan. Drink normally, avoid activities that clearly worsen pelvic pressure, and record fever, urinary frequency and pain before the appointment.

Seek urgent medical help for fever or chills with pelvic pain, sudden inability to pass urine, severe worsening pain, vomiting, confusion or marked weakness. These features can accompany a significant infection or urinary blockage and need prompt assessment.
