Causes of Pityriasis Alba

Patches may begin as subtly pink or rough areas before becoming lighter than surrounding skin. The cheeks, chin, and around the mouth are common sites, although other areas can be involved. Dry air, frequent washing, and eczema-prone skin may make the scaling more noticeable. The lighter colour can stand out more after sun exposure because nearby skin tans while the affected areas do not. Pityriasis alba is not the same as vitiligo, and a clinician can examine the border and surface when the diagnosis is uncertain.

Apply a fragrance-free moisturiser regularly, especially after bathing, and use gentle cleansers rather than hot water or vigorous rubbing. Emollient Therapy helps restore hydration and reduce roughness. Protect exposed skin from the sun so colour contrast is less obvious and irritation is limited. If redness or itch is present, a clinician may recommend a short course of Topical Corticosteroids; do not apply them near the eyes or to a child’s face without instructions.

Have pale patches assessed if they spread quickly, have a sharply defined edge, lose sensation, ooze, become very itchy, or appear in unusual locations. Arrange review when the diagnosis is unclear or the patches do not settle with moisturising. Prompt assessment is appropriate for pain, swelling, fever, or signs of infection.
