Causes of Nail Thickening

Short answer
Nail thickening may be caused by fungal infection, psoriasis, repeated pressure or injury, ageing, inflammation, or less common nail disorders.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Reading the nail changes
Fungal nail disease often produces a thick, brittle, yellowish or whitish nail with debris beneath it, although appearance alone cannot confirm infection. Nail Psoriasis may cause pits, ridges, separation from the nail bed, or yellow-red patches as well as thickening. Tight footwear, running, a past blow, eczema, and other inflammatory conditions can also alter growth.
One nail changing after trauma may behave differently from several nails changing together. A clinician may trim or scrape the nail for testing before prescribing medicine, because fungus and psoriasis need different treatment.
Practical care
Keep nails clean and dry, trim them carefully after softening, and choose footwear with enough room for the toes. Do not share nail tools, and disinfect personal tools after use. Avoid aggressive filing that injures the nail bed. If fungus is confirmed, treatment options may include Oral Antifungal Treatment or, in selected cases, Laser Treatment For Nail Fungus; the choice depends on the nail, health history, and test result.
When to seek care
Arrange assessment when thickening persists, affects walking or hand use, causes pain, or returns after treatment. Seek earlier review for redness, swelling, pus, fever, a dark changing area, or a nail lifting without a clear injury. People with diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced immunity should have painful or infected nail changes assessed promptly.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether a nail sample is needed, which diagnosis best fits the pattern, and how long regrowth may take. Discuss medicine interactions, liver health where relevant, footwear changes, and what improvement should look like as the nail grows.

Questions people ask
Can thick nails be filed thinner at home?
Gentle trimming may help, but deep filing can injure the nail bed. Have painful or very thick nails assessed before using instruments.
Does a thick nail always mean fungus?
No. Nail psoriasis, trauma, pressure, and inflammatory nail conditions can also cause thickening, so testing may be useful.
