Causes of left foot swelling

Short answer
Swelling limited to the left foot may result from injury, infection, inflammation, vein problems, lymphatic blockage, or a blood clot.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Compare
- Look for differences in colour, temperature, tenderness, and calf size.
- Skin check
- Inspect for blisters, cuts, bites, cracks, and ulcers.
- Avoid initially
- Do not vigorously massage unexplained one-sided swelling.
Why might only the left foot swell?
One-sided swelling directs attention to a problem affecting that limb rather than general fluid retention, although the pattern alone cannot identify the cause. The onset, exact boundary, skin appearance, pain, warmth, recent injury, mobility, and whether swelling extends into the calf are important clues.
What accompanying signs can suggest
Swelling after a misstep, impact, or long walk may come from a sprain, fracture, or irritated tendon. Red, hot, tender skin can occur with infection, especially when there is a cut, blister, cracked skin, or ulcer. A painful, inflamed joint can also swell during gout or another form of arthritis.
Pitting that leaves a temporary indentation may reflect fluid in the tissues. Vein or lymphatic problems can produce persistent heaviness and skin change. A clot in a deep leg vein more often causes swelling extending above the foot, but new unexplained one-sided swelling still warrants timely clinical assessment.
Practical next moves
Take off tight footwear, compare both feet and calves, and check the skin carefully, including between the toes. Elevate the limb while resting. If a minor injury is likely and sensation is intact, a cloth-wrapped cold pack may help; avoid vigorous massage until a clot or infection has been excluded.
Seek a clinical review when the swelling is unexplained, persists, recurs, or interferes with walking. Mention recent travel, reduced mobility, surgery, injury, skin damage, previous clots, and any new medicines. People with diabetes or reduced sensation should have skin wounds assessed early.
Signs that need fast care
Obtain urgent medical assessment for sudden unexplained one-sided swelling, calf pain, marked warmth, spreading redness, fever, pus, severe pain, or an inability to bear weight. A cold, pale, blue, numb, or weak foot may have impaired blood flow and also requires immediate attention.
Call emergency services if leg or foot swelling occurs with sudden breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, a racing heartbeat, or coughing blood. These symptoms can accompany a clot that has travelled to the lungs.
Useful questions at your consultation
Ask whether the pattern suggests injury, infection, joint inflammation, or a circulation problem, and whether an ultrasound or X-ray is needed. Confirm whether compression, exercise, elevation, or massage is appropriate for the suspected cause before starting it.

Questions people ask
Can standing make one foot swell?
Standing can worsen fluid pooling, but a clear difference between feet may indicate a local vein, lymphatic, inflammatory, or injury-related problem that merits assessment.
Should I use a compression sock straight away?
Not before the cause is considered. Compression may be unsuitable when arterial blood flow is reduced or when certain acute problems are suspected, so obtain tailored advice.
