Causes of an itchy throat

Allergic rhinitis can cause itching in the throat alongside sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, and watery eyes. House dust mite exposure may produce symptoms indoors, while pollen or other airborne triggers can cause a seasonal pattern. A common cold may add a scratchy throat, congestion, cough, tiredness, or a mild fever. Smoke, perfume, air-conditioning, and low humidity can irritate the throat without causing an infection. Itching, tingling, or swelling soon after eating can point to a food allergy and deserves particular care.

Sip water or a warm drink, avoid smoke and strongly scented products, and use a humidifier if the air is dry. Notice whether symptoms follow a meal, a room, outdoor exposure, or contact with an animal. Do not deliberately repeat a food that caused rapid itching or swelling.
