What should you know about causes of itchy coughing throat?

Allergic rhinitis can cause sneezing, a watery nose, throat tickling, and cough as mucus drains backwards. Dust mites, pollen, mould, or animals may be triggers; house dust mite allergy is often worse around bedding or soft furnishings. A common cold may add a blocked nose, sore throat, tiredness, or a changing cough. Smoke, perfume, air-conditioning, and dry air can irritate the throat without infection. Reflux may cause repeated throat clearing, hoarseness, or a cough after meals or when lying down. Food allergy can cause an itchy mouth or throat soon after eating and may occur with hives, swelling, vomiting, or breathing symptoms.

The timing, associated symptoms, and exposure pattern are more useful than the itch alone. An itchy throat is a symptom, so several causes can look similar at first.

Drink fluids, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and use gentle humidification if the air is dry. Wash hands and rest when cold symptoms fit. Note foods, rooms, pets, bedding, outdoor exposure, and medicines around each episode. Avoid a suspected food only if a clinician has advised a safe plan; do not test a possible allergy by deliberately repeating exposure. Allergy medication may help some allergy patterns, but selection depends on age, pregnancy, other medicines, and symptoms.

Get urgent help for throat or tongue swelling, wheezing, trouble breathing, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives after food or medicine. Arrange medical advice for a cough that persists, recurrent episodes, fever with worsening illness, swallowing difficulty, or symptoms that disturb sleep. A clinician can assess the nose, throat, lungs, reflux clues, and possible triggers.
