Short answer

Itching across the body can come from dry or irritated skin, medicines, allergy, or an underlying health condition.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Medical term
Pruritus means itching.
Helpful clue
A visible rash and its distribution can help narrow the cause.
Skin care
Cooling, unperfumed moisturiser and less scratching can limit irritation.

The short answer

Skin conditions such as eczema or hives may cause a visible rash. When little or no rash is present, clinicians may also consider thyroid, liver, kidney or blood disorders. Hodgkin lymphoma can present with persistent itching, while vulvar cancer may present with itching localised to the vulva; neither pattern can be diagnosed from itching alone.

Clues that help narrow the cause

The appearance and distribution of skin changes matter. Dryness, scaling, bumps, blisters, bites or scratch marks can suggest a skin-level trigger, while itching that begins after a new medicine or product raises a different question. Whether other household members itch can help identify a contagious cause.

A clinician may ask about night-time symptoms, heat, recent travel, pregnancy, medicines and contact with irritants. Yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, swelling, fever, night sweats, weight loss or enlarged glands can indicate that the itch is part of a body-wide illness and may lead to blood tests or further assessment.

Ways to protect itchy skin

Use cool or lukewarm water, apply an unperfumed moisturiser, choose loose soft clothing and keep nails short. Pat or cool the area instead of scratching, because broken skin can become infected. Avoid newly introduced fragranced soaps, lotions and laundry products while you look for a trigger.

Arrange a medical review when itching is widespread, severe, keeps returning, disturbs sleep or does not improve with basic skin care. Take a list of medicines and supplements, and note when symptoms began and whether a rash appeared first. A pharmacist can advise on suitable skin products, but tablets or creams do not treat every cause.

Signs that need faster help

Call emergency services for itching with swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, wheezing, faintness or a rapidly spreading reaction. These can be signs of a severe allergic response.

Seek prompt clinical advice if the skin becomes hot, increasingly painful, swollen or leaks fluid, or if itching occurs with jaundice, unexplained bruising, fever, drenching night sweats, weight loss or persistent lumps. During pregnancy, widespread itching should also be discussed promptly with the maternity team because liver-related causes need assessment.

What to ask at the consultation

You could ask whether the skin appearance points to a local condition, whether a medicine or internal illness needs checking, and which tests would change management. Clarify which moisturisers or treatments are safe for you and what change should bring you back sooner.

Questions people ask

Can the whole body itch without a rash?

Yes. Dry skin, medicine effects and some thyroid, liver, kidney or blood conditions may itch with few visible changes. Persistent widespread itching should be assessed.

Does all-over itching indicate lymphoma?

Hodgkin lymphoma can present with persistent itching, often alongside other features, but itching has many other causes and cannot establish lymphoma. A clinician can assess the full pattern.

Can scratching make the problem worse?

Repeated scratching can damage the skin, intensify the itch-scratch cycle and allow infection. Cooling and moisturising are gentler ways to manage the sensation while seeking the cause.
