Causes of heartburn at night

Short answer
Night-time heartburn commonly happens when stomach contents move upwards after eating or lying down, with reflux, pressure, or irritation contributing.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Urgent sign
- Chest pain with breathlessness or sweating
Why symptoms can worsen after dark
Lying down removes gravity’s help in keeping stomach contents below the oesophagus. A large or late meal, fatty food, alcohol, caffeine, smoking, or tight clothing may make reflux more noticeable. Acid Reflux is a common explanation, while a Hiatus Hernia can alter the position of the stomach and weaken the barrier to reflux.
Gastritis or a Peptic Ulcer may cause upper abdominal burning that is mistaken for heartburn. Obesity can increase pressure on the stomach. Burning chest discomfort can also overlap with heart or lung problems, so its location and associated symptoms matter.
Practical steps
Keep a brief diary of meals, medicines, posture, and symptoms. Try smaller evening meals, avoid lying down soon after eating, and identify personal triggers. Raising the upper body during sleep may help some people; use a stable arrangement rather than loose piles of pillows.
Ask a pharmacist or clinician about suitable treatment if symptoms recur. Acid Reflux Medication may be appropriate for some people, but ongoing symptoms, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, or unexplained weight loss need medical review rather than repeated self-treatment.
When to get urgent help
Seek emergency care for severe or squeezing chest pain, pain spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw, breathlessness, sweating, fainting, or sudden weakness. Arrange prompt medical review for black stools, vomiting blood, persistent vomiting, or food sticking when you swallow.
Questions for a clinician
Ask whether your pattern fits reflux, whether medicines could irritate the stomach, how long to try treatment, and which symptoms should lead to an examination or further testing.

Questions people ask
Can lying down cause heartburn at night?
It can make reflux easier to feel because stomach contents can move upwards more readily when you are horizontal, especially after a late meal.
Is every burning chest sensation reflux?
No. Heart and lung problems can cause chest discomfort. New, severe, or exertional pain, especially with breathlessness or sweating, needs urgent assessment.
