Causes of Hair Itching

Dry air, frequent washing or harsh products can disturb the scalp barrier. Contact Dermatitis may follow a new dye, fragrance, oil or shampoo and can cause burning, redness or swelling. Atopic Dermatitis, Asteatotic Eczema, psoriasis and Lichen Planus can cause persistent inflammation and scale. Scabies may cause intense itch with bumps elsewhere on the body, while a yeast infection or Hives has a different pattern. The location, timing and visible changes help guide diagnosis.

Stop any newly introduced product, rinse thoroughly, avoid scratching and use lukewarm water. Choose a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and keep nails short to reduce skin injury. Do not share combs, hats or brushes if an infestation or infection is possible. A pharmacist or clinician can identify whether a medicated product is appropriate; avoid repeatedly switching treatments when the scalp is raw or the diagnosis is uncertain.

Seek assessment for persistent itch, thick scale, hair loss, broken skin, bleeding, crusting, pus or painful swelling. Get urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty or widespread rapidly developing hives. A child, pregnant person or someone with reduced immunity should ask for tailored treatment advice before using medicated products.
