Causes of Fungal Rash

Short answer
Fungal rashes develop when yeast or dermatophytes multiply on warm, damp skin, sometimes after contact with an infected person, animal or surface.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What can lead to a fungal rash?
Sweat trapped in skin folds, tight clothing, shared towels, communal showers and minor skin damage can create conditions that favour fungal growth. Feet, groin, underarms, chest and other covered areas are common sites. Ringworm may form a scaly, expanding edge, while yeast-related irritation can look bright red and involve moist folds. A rash that looks similar may instead be eczema, contact dermatitis, psoriasis, heat rash or scabies, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.
Practical next steps
Keep the area clean and thoroughly dry, change sweaty clothing promptly, avoid sharing towels or razors, and wash clothing and bedding regularly. Do not scratch or apply a steroid cream to an undiagnosed rash without clinical advice, because steroids can alter its appearance and allow some fungal infections to spread. A pharmacist or clinician can recommend an appropriate antifungal product and duration; scalp, nail, facial and widespread infections may need a medical assessment.
When to seek medical care
Arrange an assessment if the rash is spreading, painful, oozing, recurrent, affecting the scalp or nails, or not improving with suitable treatment. Seek urgent help for rapidly worsening redness, severe swelling, fever, facial or eye involvement, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as breathing difficulty. People with diabetes, reduced immunity or significant skin disease should obtain advice early.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be fungal or another condition with a similar appearance? Should the skin be examined or tested? Which treatment is suitable for this body area, and how long should it be used? How can household spread or recurrence be reduced?

Questions people ask
Can a fungal rash spread to another person?
Some fungal infections spread through direct skin contact or shared towels, clothing, brushes and surfaces. Avoid sharing personal items until the infection has been assessed and treated.
Can I use a steroid cream for a suspected fungal rash?
Use a steroid only when a clinician recommends it for the diagnosis. On some fungal infections, it can mask changes and permit further spread.
