Causes of Eye Bags and Dark Circles

Short answer
Eye bags and dark circles can come from inherited anatomy, thin or pigmented skin, fluid retention, allergies, rubbing, ageing, fatigue, or sun exposure, and more than one cause may occur together.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
Eye bags and dark circles can come from inherited anatomy, thin or pigmented skin, fluid retention, allergies, rubbing, ageing, fatigue, or sun exposure, and more than one cause may occur together. Their colour and shape can offer clues, but appearance alone cannot confirm a medical condition.
What may be causing the change
A hollow beneath the lower eyelid can create a shadow that looks brown, grey, or blue depending on the light. This contour change is often called a tear trough hollow. Loose skin and fat that becomes more visible with ageing can create a pouch or bag, while morning puffiness may reflect fluid collecting around the eyes overnight.
Brown colouring may relate to melanin and sun exposure. Bluish or purple tones can be more noticeable when the skin is thin and underlying vessels show through. Eczema or another itchy skin problem can lead to rubbing, dryness, and post-inflammatory darkening; atopic dermatitis is one condition that can affect the skin around the eyes. Poor sleep, dehydration, nasal congestion, seasonal allergies, and prolonged eye strain may make an existing tendency look more pronounced without being the sole cause.
What you can do
Start with gentle skin care: avoid rubbing, use a fragrance-free moisturiser suitable for the eyelids, and protect the area from daylight with sunglasses and an eye-safe sunscreen. A cool compress may temporarily reduce puffiness. If itching, scaling, or watering is present, a clinician can check for dermatitis or allergy and recommend treatment that is appropriate for the delicate eye area.
When hollows or shadows are the main concern, a dermatologist or qualified aesthetic doctor can assess skin colour, volume, laxity, and puffiness separately. Options may include topical care, procedures for pigmentation or texture, or carefully selected under-eye filler for suitable tear-trough anatomy. Filler is not appropriate for every under-eye shape, so an examination matters more than choosing a treatment from a photograph.
When to seek medical care
Arrange a medical assessment if swelling is new, persistent, painful, itchy, scaly, or clearly worse on one side. Seek prompt care for eye redness with pain, vision changes, marked tenderness, fever, injury, or swelling that is rapidly increasing. A clinician can also help when darkening follows a new product or medicine, or when symptoms continue despite stopping an irritant.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Is the main issue pigmentation, a shadow from a hollow, swelling, loose skin, or irritation? Could eczema or allergy be contributing? Which products or procedures suit the skin around my eyes? What side effects, recovery, and follow-up should I expect?

Questions people ask
Can lack of sleep cause dark circles?
Poor sleep can make existing shadows or bluish tones more noticeable by increasing fatigue and sometimes puffiness, but genetics, skin thickness, pigmentation, and facial structure may also contribute.
Are eye bags and dark circles the same thing?
No. Eye bags usually describe fullness or a pouch under the eyes, while dark circles describe darker-looking colour or shadow. They can appear together but may need different approaches.
Can rubbing my eyes make the area darker?
Repeated rubbing can irritate fragile eyelid skin and may worsen dryness, inflammation, or post-inflammatory darkening. Treating the itch or allergy can help break that cycle.
