Causes of Exfoliative Cheilitis

The lips can develop a cycle in which dryness causes tightness, peeling is removed, and the exposed surface becomes irritated again. Lip licking, biting, picking, wind, sun, fragranced balms, flavourings, cosmetics, and dental products may keep the cycle going. Cheilitis can also accompany eczema or contact allergy. Crusting at the corners, blisters, ulcers, or a single persistent rough patch may suggest a different lip problem and needs examination rather than self-diagnosis.

Apply a plain, fragrance-free ointment often, especially after eating and before sleep; Emollient Therapy describes this type of barrier support. Avoid licking, peeling, scrubbing, and products that sting. Use a gentle toothpaste and protect lips from wind and sun. If inflammation continues, a clinician may prescribe Topical Corticosteroids for a defined course and explain where and how to apply them. Do not borrow steroid creams without advice.

Arrange review when peeling persists despite removing irritants, repeatedly returns, or interferes with eating and speaking. Seek prompt assessment for spreading swelling, pus, fever, severe pain, a non-healing sore, bleeding, or a firm one-sided patch. Sudden lip swelling with breathing or swallowing difficulty is an emergency.
