What should you know about causes of excessive sneezing?

Allergic rhinitis commonly presents with repeated sneezing, an itchy nose, watery eyes and a clear runny nose. House dust mite allergy may be worse in bedrooms or after cleaning, while pet allergy can flare around animals or on fabrics that carry dander. A common cold may bring sneezing with a blocked nose, sore throat, cough or feeling unwell. Smoke, perfume, dusty air and sudden changes in temperature can irritate the nasal lining without causing an allergy.

Notice timing, triggers, nasal discharge and other symptoms. Sneezing alone does not identify one condition, and a symptom pattern can change with exposure or infection.

Move away from smoke, strong scents and dusty areas, and ventilate rooms when possible. Wash hands regularly, avoid rubbing the nose, and use tissues when sneezing. If bedroom symptoms suggest dust mites, wash bedding regularly and reduce dust-collecting clutter. Keep a brief trigger diary, including contact with pets, cleaning and outdoor exposure. A clinician or pharmacist can explain whether allergy medication is suitable, especially if you have other conditions or take regular medicines.

Arrange a medical review if sneezing continues, disrupts sleep, affects work or study, or comes with ongoing blocked breathing or recurrent sinus discomfort. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or a rapidly spreading itchy rash after an exposure. These signs can indicate a serious allergic reaction rather than uncomplicated nasal irritation.
