Causes of dry skin all over the body

The skin loses moisture more easily during dry weather, frequent bathing, or use of strong soaps and cleansers. Asteatotic eczema can create very dry, cracked, itch-prone skin, often on the limbs. Atopic dermatitis may bring recurring itch and inflamed patches, while psoriasis can cause thicker areas with scale. Dryness that begins suddenly, becomes widespread, or appears alongside a new medicine or other body symptoms deserves a clinician's view. The pattern does not identify one cause by itself.

Keep bathing brief and lukewarm. Choose a fragrance-free cleanser and apply a rich emollient over damp skin, especially after washing. Wear soft breathable fabrics and avoid scratching; cool compresses can ease an itchy area. Review new soaps, detergents, medicines, and supplements with a clinician rather than stopping prescribed treatment on your own. If patches are inflamed or repeatedly cracked, treatment may need to address eczema or psoriasis instead of dryness alone.

Book an appointment when dryness covers much of the body, interferes with sleep, cracks or bleeds, or continues despite a careful moisturizing routine. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, facial swelling, breathing trouble, fever, painful skin, or oozing areas.
