Causes of dizziness in pregnancy

Short answer
Dizziness in pregnancy may result from circulation changes, dehydration, low blood sugar, heat, or anaemia.

What it may mean
Pregnancy can change blood flow and make standing quickly or lying flat uncomfortable. Not eating regularly can contribute to hypoglycaemia, while vomiting, heat or insufficient fluids may lead to dehydration or heat exhaustion. Anaemia, including iron deficiency anaemia, can cause lightheadedness with tiredness or breathlessness. Anxiety can intensify rapid breathing and a faint feeling. Spinning sensations triggered by head movement may point to benign paroxysmal positional vertigo; palpitations need a different assessment, including for rhythm problems such as atrial fibrillation.
What to do when dizzy
Sit or lie on your side straight away, loosen tight clothing and rise slowly once the feeling passes. Take regular meals and fluids, avoid overheating, and do not drive while dizzy. Tell your maternity team about recurrent episodes, especially if they follow vomiting, exertion or a new medicine. Do not start iron or other supplements without advice.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for fainting, chest pain, severe headache, vision changes, one-sided weakness, significant breathlessness, heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain or reduced fetal movement. Prompt assessment is also sensible when dizziness persists, keeps returning, or comes with a racing or irregular heartbeat.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether you need blood tests for anaemia, a review of hydration and meals, blood-pressure checks, or assessment of palpitations and positional spinning.

Questions people ask
Can not eating cause dizziness in pregnancy?
Long gaps between meals can contribute to low blood sugar and lightheadedness. Regular nourishing meals and clinician-approved advice may help.
Is dizziness in pregnancy always harmless?
No. Recurrent or severe dizziness, fainting, bleeding, chest pain, severe headache or breathlessness needs medical assessment.
