What should you know about causes of dermatofibroma?

Dermatofibromas often appear as small, firm bumps on the legs or arms. They may be pink, brown, or darker than surrounding skin and can dimple inward when gently pinched. The exact trigger is not always identifiable; an insect bite, splinter, or other small injury may precede one, but many people do not recall an event.

A skin lump has several possible explanations. A clinician may identify a typical dermatofibroma by examining its surface, firmness, colour, and behaviour. Atypical or uncertain lesions may need closer assessment.

Avoid picking, cutting, or repeatedly rubbing the nodule, since this can cause bleeding or infection. Photograph it occasionally in consistent lighting if you are monitoring change. If it catches on clothing, bleeds after minor contact, or is bothersome cosmetically, discuss options with a dermatologist.

Surgical Excision can remove a lesion, but it leaves a scar and may not be needed for a stable, typical dermatofibroma. Removal is generally considered when the diagnosis is uncertain or the nodule causes ongoing trouble.

Book a dermatology assessment if a lump grows, changes colour or outline, becomes persistently painful, repeatedly bleeds, or develops an ulcer. Seek urgent care for uncontrolled bleeding, rapidly increasing swelling, or spreading warmth and redness with fever.
